Your trainers are ready, your playlist is sorted and your race number is pinned on. Next up: hair that won't spend the whole run in your face. Whether you're heading to parkrun or lining up for a longer race, a comfortable hairstyle is one less thing to think about.
These seven ideas are a starting point. What stays put depends on your hair length, texture and accessories, so give your favourite a trial run in training first.
1. The high ponytail
Simple, quick and a running classic. Gather your hair into a high ponytail and secure it with a snag-free hair tie. If the swinging ends annoy you, braid the ponytail or add another tie further down.
Use small clips for shorter layers rather than relying on them to hold the whole style. Keep the ponytail comfortable, not painfully tight.
2. Double Dutch braids
Two braids running from your hairline towards the nape can help keep layers contained and hair off your face. Finish each braid with a small hair tie, then check that nothing pulls when you turn your head.
If you're new to braiding, practise before race morning or ask a friend to help. The start line isn't the place for a first attempt.
3. The braided bun
Secure a ponytail, braid the length and wrap it into a bun. Fasten it with another hair tie and any pins you need, making sure none press into your scalp.
This is worth trying if you prefer your hair completely off your neck. Test it with a few gentle jumps before heading out.
4. The bubble ponytail
Start with a ponytail and add small hair ties at intervals down its length. Gently loosen each section to create the bubble shape, without pulling the whole style loose.
It's a playful option for race photos and an easy way to coordinate colourful ties with your kit.
5. The low braided ponytail
Prefer a cap or visor? A low ponytail braided from the nape may sit more comfortably beneath it than a high bun.
Try the complete combination in training, including your sunglasses, so you can spot any awkward pressure points before race day.
6. The headband and half-up combination
For a bob, fringe or shorter layers, gather whatever length you can into a half-up style and use a comfortable headband to help keep the front pieces back.
Check that the band stays in place without squeezing. Tuck loose pieces carefully and adjust before you start, rather than repeatedly during your run.
7. Space buns
Divide your hair into two sections and secure each into a bun. Adjust their position until they feel balanced and comfortable.
They're a fun choice for a celebration run. As with any style, test how they feel at your usual running pace before committing to them for a race.
A quick race-day hair checklist
- Try your hairstyle on a training run first.
- Choose comfortable, snag-free hair ties and avoid painful tension.
- Check your hairstyle works with your cap, headphones and sunglasses.
- Pack a spare hair tie for a quick adjustment.
- Use decorative clips as finishing touches, not as a replacement for the main hair tie.
Add a little race-day personality
Your kit can be practical and playful. Add a few SHOOTING STARS hair clips to finish your look, or explore our running accessories for more colour inspiration.
No promises of a personal best, just a little extra personality on the start line. Too slick to sit still.
